Here in the northern hemisphere, we are passing through that momentary still point we call Winter Solstice.  This longest night of the year, calls us to gather in candle-lit rooms to share stories told in words, music, dance, and feasting, stories that promise our very survival with the return of warmth and light.  Hunkering down, together and alone, by fireside, candle, or electric hearth, this season of Renewal invites us to rest, to reflect, to touch the marrow of our lives on a planet dancing through space in rhythms so gracious and steadfast as to make all life grow, die back, and grow once more.  Winter Solstice brings out the poet and philosopher, the dark fear and the brilliant hope in each of us. In this time of least light, our inner eye senses our interconnections with every other being – human and non-human – with whom we share this glorious world.

Those of us called to teach, who flush with the pleasure of a student’s hard won insight or accomplishment and who do all we can to stay true to our purpose to lift and to launch others into the magic of new knowledge, new skills, and new relationships, are often shocked to feel our passion for work we believe in unequivocally drain away.  And yet this ebbing of passion happens, these days more than ever before, even among the most committed teachers.  We often learn the hard way that powering through the pain we feel on our students’ behalf can lead to Compassion Fatigue so debilitating we feel forced to leave rather than further our relationship with teaching and learning.  Happily, there is now an effective remedy for teachers’ professional exhaustion.

In the aftermath of Harvey Weinstein sexual predation revelations, hundreds of thousands of people, mostly women, are participating in the #MeToo movement to increase solidarity among the victims of unwanted sexual advances and violent sexual assault.  We are millions, we are global, and we have been, until now, largely unheard.  Why?

The Sacred Nature of Our Work

As we witness increasing incoherence in the larger world, it helps to tune in to the resilience building processes we create to meet our personal, familial/social, and professional needs.  Resilience is not simply a word we use to encourage our own or others’ flagging spirits but a noteworthy outcome, at least to those of us committed to mindful attention to personal and professional stress levels and recovery times.  Belly breathing, walking in nature, body talking, finger tapping, and other in-the-moment self-regulation techniques allow us to be more present, no matter what might be happening in the moment.  And being present invites Presence, that sense of belonging to something so much larger than a species increasingly known for its destructive choices  and excessive habits.

On July 16th , 2017, in Markham, Ontario, I’ll be conducting what I think of as a graduate seminar in Self-Regulation and Resilience Building.  When we read about early and adult trauma, the emphasis is usually on its crippling effects.  At this event, however, our emphasis is on self regulation during potentially traumatic experiences and resilience building for the long-term.

Positive psychologists remind us of the gifts of trauma by using the phrase Post Traumatic Growth.  In our resilience seminar, an experiential event, we will focus almost exclusively on the benefits of trauma-informed approaches at home, in community, and in the workplace.  We will also practice several self-regulation and resilience building techniques to boost optimism regarding how we can become trauma-resilient regardless of our ACEs scores.

To augment the information and tools I teach at the in-person event, I’ve created a resource booklet that includes a history of the evolution of language we use about trauma, my own personal connection to ACEs, the value of trauma-informed approaches in diverse workplace situations – including the value of a trauma-informed approach for parents, information about two sources of self-regulation and resilience building tools, and an annotated resource section listing ACEs research sources and several non-ACEs sources that broaden our understanding of the cultural forces encouraging traumatizing practices and how we can ameliorate these.  If you cannot attend the Markham/Toronto, Ontario, event but would like the resource PDF, it will be available for $15.00 after the July 16th, 2017 event.  Email Jane at jane@winterblooms.net to request your copy.

To learn more about this event, please visit the National EFT Training Institute at  www.neftti.com.

In this part of the ever greening world, it is impossible not to see resilience manifesting in every tended garden and field.  Even untended fields attract butterflies, bees, and the countless soil makers that flourish to ensure our magnificent earth remains fecund, at least in some places on the Globe.

Today, Summer is officially with us in the northern hemisphere.  Down under, folks are celebrating, not the longest day as we are, but the longest night.  Using our imaginations to float out into space to witness the cycling Dance of of the Seasons across our Earth Mother’s face and body can’t help but infuse us with optimism.  The Solstices are times to remind ourselves that our personal store of resilience is supported by such acts of imagination.  Now, with ever more conflict tugging at our hearts, building resilience consciously and purposefully is the life task every Possible Human.

Many of us concerned about increasing extreme weather events are aware of how rapidly climate change is effecting life all over the globe.  If you would like a primmer on how human activities are causing shifts in biodiversity, please visit globalissues.org/article/172/climate-change-affects-biodiversity  or any reputable source of information on rapid climate changes caused by humans – anthropogenic climate change.  This post’s focus is not on climate change directly; rather it explores how human diversity and global diversity are mirroring each other in the patterns found in increased extreme weather events and increased human polarization and lack of civility in problem solving. Acute human polarization and lack of civility when dealing with the environmental crises mean we have fewer creative solutions to address the climate calamities that have become every day events. To find out how we can participate in positive change, read on.

In Praise of Girls and Women: International Women’s Day 2017

Is there anything a group of girls and women cannot accomplish once they’ve decided to take on a cause?  The answer is a resounding “NO!”  Girls and women have always taken on the role of society’s connective tissue, reaching well beyond their comfort zones to challenge the status quo.  No where is our vital commitment to fearless involvement more apparent than in the tapping community.  Tapping is all about increased agency, and agency, that ability to identify a problem and cultivate the energy to transform it into an opportunity for positive change, has become the most obvious characteristic of girls and women during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.  We are the force to be reckoned with at the forefront of Radical Love.  Anyone who doubts this should simply follow up a little of the research assembled in this blog regarding the scope of women’s and girls’ remarkable agency over the last hundred years.

Sometimes we need inspiration, especially in the form of pertinent examples from the past, to help us to navigate a shockingly turbulent present.  Our current intersections of racism, systemic poverty, misogyny, LGBTQ assaults, and climate change with fascistic methods of governing a country that has prided itself on its democratic traditions for centuries deliver a call to action like no other in recent history.  How do we answer, and keep answering, the calls to protect citizens and non-citizens, animals, plants, birds and insects, the very air we breathe, the water we drink, the earth that grows all that is?   The most important answer to these questions is to participate in at least one of the hundreds of movements that have arisen to protect hard won democratic freedoms and all human and non-human inhabitants of our Earth home.
