Nothing can unsettle us like a bad fall. Whether we fall because of carelessness, weather conditions, or the sudden giving out of a body part, falling grabs our attention and suggests we develop a relationship with the circumstances sooner rather than later. As with fear, ignoring the emotions surrounding a sudden fall ensures they will persist. Tapping for the pain, shock, and beliefs that follow a fall helps us to tune into our body’s wisdom as it teaches us how to relate to ourselves in more loving and positive ways.

Failure can be a wonderful teacher, especially when we tap without seeming to shift specific issues. Failure prompts us to think and intuit outside our usual patterns of cause and effect. One of my favourite phrases when tapping on a particularly stubborn issue is “If I need to fail at understanding and resolving this challenge now, what are failure’s gifts?” Seeing failure as a gift giver is a positive reframe that prompts us to look for the hidden benefits – what Gary Craig has called the Secondary Gains – in what appear to be negative situations. We may be close to understanding something that requires special emotional support and the time provided by apparent failure allows for that support to materialize in our lives. When our tapping failures are seen in this way, EFT becomes a process rather than a product, a journey rather than a destination; it takes the pressure off our problem solving efforts and brings into our awareness helpful forces beyond our control that support our intention to live authentically and with love.
Because tapping is becoming well known as an effective remedy for in-the-moment stress and even trauma, I assume a working knowledge of the tapping process on this blog. If you are not yet familiar with the tapping process, many reliable website resources are available on the web including those maintained by AAMET, EFT Universe, and The Tapping Solution. These three education resources feature descriptions of the tapping process as well as illustrations of the meridian points most commonly used in Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT, also known as tapping. Because of the sensitive content of this blog post, I recommend readers tap while reading it. Tapping while consciously giving our attention to potentially distressing information helps to create the space for understanding, love, and compassion for ourselves and for all participants in such events as the Isla Vista shooting of last weekend. In the aftermath of this and any traumatic event, calm and centred space within our hearts and minds is not an easy condition to cultivate. Tapping supports this goal.
