With the triple threats of drastic weather, expanding wars, and bacterial and viral epidemics topping our news stories, it is easy to miss the beauty and harmony of each day.  The sun rises here in north eastern Vermont to reveal a mist that hovers over harvested fields and only here and there reveals the blazing colour that is to come.  In these woods, stillness reigns until a truck or school bus announce the business of the day.  Wild turkeys, oblivious to human enterprise, move in stately dance across the stubbled fields, slow in their foraging and melodic in their conversations.  Cities, too, offer their faces to the sun, dazzling early risers with astonishing light shows on the windows of high rise apartments and creating shadows that remind us of life’s ever-present mysteries.  This ever-present beauty evokes awe and wonder and yet is so easily overlooked in our Type A, Do, Do, Do world here in the west.  Tapping can help us to pause before beginning our day, to acknowledge what is beyond human doing, and to participate in the Great Being we call Life.

Today, September 21, 2014, a massive march in NYC is bringing world attention to the urgent threats we face because of climate change.  Tomorrow, many of the same participants will shift to Wall Street to remind the world that a non-stop, extractive economy is killing the environment and its diverse human and non-human communities the world over.  Becoming involved in halting climate change is both inspiring and threatening. Television and film footage of fifties and sixties civil-rights sit ins offers vivid examples of the inspiration of collective action as well as the terrifying violence it can provoke.   Bearing blows, risking imprisonment, and even dying come with activism’s territory.  And yet we know with certainty that some causes are so important we muster our courage and take to the front lines.  Tapping can help us to affirm and act on our resolve to be the change we want to see in the world.

Here in the US, we are once again collectively immersed in the traumatic aftereffects of September 11, 2001.  Many 9/11 stories are very important indicators of recovery, transformation, and hope, but an equal number of reports are fear-based.  In these days of total immersion in technology-generated information/entertainment, it is vital to discern how each news source impacts our sense of well being. Tapping can help us to gain perspective on national and international events, no matter how horrific, and to maintain an informed view of the world as it is.  This is important because we need balanced and reliable information to live well in the world, as individuals and as a nation.

Tapping and “Wrinkle Porn”

Recently one of our weekly Vermont papers ran a review of And So It Goes, a film about two people in their late sixties whose relationship evokes such scorn in the reviewer that he must coin a new phrase, “wrinkle porn”, to express his disgust with this film and others whose characters are beyond middle age and still interested in sex.  I haven’t seen the film, not because of the review, but because it came and went in the blink of an eye while blockbusters showcasing ever more cleverly manufactured gory deaths, explosions, and earth ravaging have run at local theatres for weeks.  This post, however, isn’t about film; it is about language that suggests we should be ashamed of our passions once we reach what our culture calls Old Age.  Tapping helps us to claim our passion – for sex and for life – at any age; it also helps us to neutralize the negative effects of words used cleverly, if inaccurately, to describe the waters we navigate in our sixties, seventies, and beyond.
