It is often challenging to practice stewardship at a time of year when everyone seems mad to eat from a sense of duty and tradition rather than gratitude and hunger and to buy goods to “fuel our economy” in its quest for limitless growth rather than out of personal need.  And yet we know in our wisest, most conscious moments that our habits of excessive consumption are killing our planet, shortening our individual lifespans, and alienating us from our brothers and sisters all over the world.  Here in the west, perhaps unwittingly, we have become insular and parochial rather than thankful world citizens.  We have made having more of everything the greatest good and in the process chained our souls to a brutal and unforgiving way of life.  We witness the signs of dire poverty on every street corner of every town, city, and village.  We witness racism at work in our educational, political, and judicial systems.  We complain about our leaders, but show no leadership ourselves.  We go along with things as they are because to do otherwise requires an effort we cannot imagine making.  Change, however, is always possible.  At this time of year, as the seasons change, as our fuel bills change, as our wardrobes change, as our relationships with our modes of transit change, the energies of change – of fundamental transformation – batter at the doors of our yearning hearts.

Since the body is the holder of our secrets, sometimes gentle, sometimes vigorous bodywork can bring hidden issues to the margins of our consciousness to signal new work to be done.  This can be a surprising process, especially when we think we’re just going out for a run but during or afterward find some troubling past or current issue has surfaced for our attention, seemingly out of the blue.  Potentially challenging experiences can be turned to advantage by inviting our bodywork to be a full partner in our EFT/Tapping sessions.  Dance, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, Yoga, walking, swimming, or running become vital components of our spiritual, emotional, and intellectual evolution when we consciously invite our movement experiences to contribute to the deeper truths we are seeking about the Self and our current stage of growth.

Many people are introduced to Tapping with expectations of experiencing the “one-minute wonder” that put Gary Craig and the first EFT practitioners on the Energy Psychology map.  It is an unfortunate expectation, since some of  EFT’s most valuable results manifest without fanfare and over a relatively long period of time.  The yearning for instant change is often true for the young and eager students who come to the protocol wanting to transform their lives in fifteen minutes, or even an hour, without the deep reflection that contributes to our collective store of wisdom.

Recently I had a session with a client who had been suffering with jaw, neck, and shoulder tension for some time.  As she spoke her narrative, a story that covered more than fifteen years of physical and emotional pain, I imagined her striding forcefully down the street.  In my imagination, her walk was such that her feet slapped the pavement hard as she moved forward.  This woman is delicate in appearance, the seeming antithesis of someone who might slam her feet on the ground as she walked or ran.  In time, I brought up the image as a next-step suggestion.

Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge, for knowledge is limited, while imagination embraces the entire world, stimulating progress, giving birth to evolution.” In these days of information overload at home, at work, and in our communities, it is helpful to remember that human beings have the power to imagine a different kind of world, and, once imagined, the emotional intelligence, the intellectual insight, and the spiritual, physical, and social skills to realize this world.
