Renewal.  Rejuvenation.  Reinvention.  These are important concepts throughout our lives, but they are especially potent at this time of year.  We often feel the powers of renewal and rejuvenation after time spent in nature, after visits with true friends, and even after a good night’s sleep. Reinvention is a little trickier and never more so as we navigate our fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, and beyond.  Many of us actually tell ourselves daily:   “I’m too old to change,”  and “I’ve always been like this,” and “I’ve tried before and always failed,” even when the habit we’re speaking of – smoking, processed foods, sedentary lifestyle – are robbing us of energies that would otherwise be spent creating the lives we really want to live.  Despite our beliefs to the contrary, renewal and reinvention are possibilities until we draw our last breath, and, who knows, perhaps even beyond.  We are always invited to fashion lives that bring joy to ourselves and others.  We simply have to learn and then practice certain skills in order to do so.

How challenging it is to feel joy at this time of year when we are devastated by the murders of children, men, and women who, because of skin colour, are frightening our mostly white police forces into fatal acts of violence.  We are, at our core, an empathetic species, and so the unnecessary deaths of people who have been profiled because of race is abhorrent to us.   Many are marching.  Many are speaking out.  Many are staging die-ins.  Many are calling town meetings to attempt to bridge the gulf between law enforcement officers and citizens of colour.  We are participating in these protests because we know it is our greatest challenge at this moment in history to transform the judicial, educational, political, and social systems that cause disproportionate numbers of people of colour to be killed or incarcerated.  We also know climate change requires our unified attention, but we cannot attend to the serious matters of planetary distress for as long as we are divided on racial, religious, and nationalistic lines.  Holidays in our culture are associated with material gifts and feelings of deprivation when we don’t get what we want.  But Holidays are Holy Days.  Now, more than ever before, we are called upon to use this sacred time of year, the rebirth of Light and Hope in every culture, to find a way to heal the deep divides among Earth’s peoples.   And, as we know, all transformation begins at home.

Holidays.  For some people, this time of year is filled with the joy of anticipated reunions and the evolution of family and community traditions.  For others, the official onset of the winter season heightens fear, loneliness, and lack of connection to our fellow human beings.  We in the west have created the perfect conditions for situational depression through our emphasis on material gifts, an emphasis that eclipses the intangible joys the season brings.  Finding our way into the spiritual heart of the Winter Solstice is challenging but it can be done, even as we feel ourselves slipping into despair over human excesses.

Tapping and Purpose

Purpose.  We all long for one, admiring people who find theirs early and spend their lives doing the thing they love to do in an environment that makes them glad to be alive.  As I write this sentence I can’t help but think of Jane Goodall, primatologist, anthropologist, writer, and activist who has brought so much information about our primate cousins, the Chimpanzees, to our general store of knowledge, who began her work as a girl in her teens and now, at eighty, continues to deepen our understanding of the consequences of environmental degradation through works such as Reason for Hope.  People who find their niche early in life appear to live charmed lives, because no matter the challenges they face, their purpose fuels their desire to get up each morning and embrace what is with courage, wisdom, and enthusiasm.  We all want such lives.  Privately and publicly, we want our lives to matter, to have purpose, in spite of whatever cynicism we express when we feel defeated.  Tapping, if applied with gentle persistence, can help us to understand our purpose in the broadest sense, and in doing so, increase our zest for life.
