Building Bridges through Loss: Two/Arshay Cooper/A Most Beautiful Thing

Signs of the improbable healing at work in our world just keep coming.  One of these signs appeared in a recent edition of the News & Citizen, a local/regional northern Vermont weekly paper, announced by the headline, “From gang to crew: Black rower finds peace on the water.” Rowing is one of those sports Ivy League colleges support to ensure high enrolment. It is expensive and exclusive,  so the story of an all black rowing team from west Chicago is startling news, as is the linking of three words: gang, crew, and peace.

Alive Inside: The Film

Sometimes we get stuck in a go-to solution for life’s many challenges.  Tapping – like jogging, cleansing, yoga, meditation, and the other effective self-help tools we use to bring understanding, perspective, and peace into our lives – can leave us feeling let down because of overuse.  When this happens to me, I turn to story in one of its myriad forms.  Most recently that form was documentary film, specifically Michael Rossato-Bennett’s  Alive Inside, the story of Dan Cohen’s grace-filled efforts to bring music to nursing homes residents experiencing Alzheimer’s and Dementia.

Tapping and Malala

This month the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Satyarthi for their separate efforts to increase educational opportunities for children.  While Kailash Satyarthi is a veteran social-justice worker in India, Malala Yousafzai is relatively new to the advocacy scene.  At seventeen Malala is the youngest Nobel Laureate, remarkable in itself, but far more remarkable since she was shot by terrorists at twelve for the crime of not only attending school but also advocating for other girls to have this right.  In her physical recovery and her writing debut, I Am Malala, this young woman reveals a tenacity of purpose and vision that is inspirational for everyone.  Tapping while holding this young woman’s image and work in our consciousness adds power to this inspiration and fuel to our own commitments.
