Here in the northern hemisphere, we are passing through that momentary still point we call Winter Solstice.  This longest night of the year, calls us to gather in candle-lit rooms to share stories told in words, music, dance, and feasting, stories that promise our very survival with the return of warmth and light.  Hunkering down, together and alone, by fireside, candle, or electric hearth, this season of Renewal invites us to rest, to reflect, to touch the marrow of our lives on a planet dancing through space in rhythms so gracious and steadfast as to make all life grow, die back, and grow once more.  Winter Solstice brings out the poet and philosopher, the dark fear and the brilliant hope in each of us. In this time of least light, our inner eye senses our interconnections with every other being – human and non-human – with whom we share this glorious world.

Renewal.  Rejuvenation.  Reinvention.  These are important concepts throughout our lives, but they are especially potent at this time of year.  We often feel the powers of renewal and rejuvenation after time spent in nature, after visits with true friends, and even after a good night’s sleep. Reinvention is a little trickier and never more so as we navigate our fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, and beyond.  Many of us actually tell ourselves daily:   “I’m too old to change,”  and “I’ve always been like this,” and “I’ve tried before and always failed,” even when the habit we’re speaking of – smoking, processed foods, sedentary lifestyle – are robbing us of energies that would otherwise be spent creating the lives we really want to live.  Despite our beliefs to the contrary, renewal and reinvention are possibilities until we draw our last breath, and, who knows, perhaps even beyond.  We are always invited to fashion lives that bring joy to ourselves and others.  We simply have to learn and then practice certain skills in order to do so.

Many people are introduced to Tapping with expectations of experiencing the “one-minute wonder” that put Gary Craig and the first EFT practitioners on the Energy Psychology map.  It is an unfortunate expectation, since some of  EFT’s most valuable results manifest without fanfare and over a relatively long period of time.  The yearning for instant change is often true for the young and eager students who come to the protocol wanting to transform their lives in fifteen minutes, or even an hour, without the deep reflection that contributes to our collective store of wisdom.

With the triple threats of drastic weather, expanding wars, and bacterial and viral epidemics topping our news stories, it is easy to miss the beauty and harmony of each day.  The sun rises here in north eastern Vermont to reveal a mist that hovers over harvested fields and only here and there reveals the blazing colour that is to come.  In these woods, stillness reigns until a truck or school bus announce the business of the day.  Wild turkeys, oblivious to human enterprise, move in stately dance across the stubbled fields, slow in their foraging and melodic in their conversations.  Cities, too, offer their faces to the sun, dazzling early risers with astonishing light shows on the windows of high rise apartments and creating shadows that remind us of life’s ever-present mysteries.  This ever-present beauty evokes awe and wonder and yet is so easily overlooked in our Type A, Do, Do, Do world here in the west.  Tapping can help us to pause before beginning our day, to acknowledge what is beyond human doing, and to participate in the Great Being we call Life.
