As we witness increasing incoherence in the larger world, it helps to tune in to the resilience building processes we create to meet our personal, familial/social, and professional needs.  Resilience is not simply a word we use to encourage our own or others’ flagging spirits but a noteworthy outcome, at least to those of us committed to mindful attention to personal and professional stress levels and recovery times.  Belly breathing, walking in nature, body talking, finger tapping, and other in-the-moment self-regulation techniques allow us to be more present, no matter what might be happening in the moment.  And being present invites Presence, that sense of belonging to something so much larger than a species increasingly known for its destructive choices  and excessive habits.

Today in the northern hemisphere we are living through the very closest we on Earth get to Enlightenment.  The Summer Solstice,  the longest day and shortest night of the year, inspires all kinds of activities, from drum and dance circles and  community ceremonies to private moments in which the participant takes time to reflect on the metaphoric planting, growing, and harvesting we invite into our summer lives. This blog explores this individual way of honouring the Summer Solstice by taking time throughout today and the days to come to increase awareness of our inner gardens.

Greeting the New Year Consciously

As the season explodes with the message to ‘Party, Party, Party,’ many of us are turning away from what Leonard Cohen calls the ‘hurly burly’ of daily life to attend instead to our inner guidance.  When we turn inward at this time of year, we are creating the sacred space necessary for reflection about the year that is slipping away and about the year to come.  New Year’s Eve is a potent time for those of us committed to living consciously, because it offers us a clear ending and a clear beginning in a single moment.  As we light our candles, gather our thoughts, and open our hearts and our journals, we are consciously attending to where we have been physically, emotionally, and spiritually; when we complete these reflections, we then turn our attention to our aspirations and intentions for the year to come.
