Failure can be a wonderful teacher, especially when we tap without seeming to shift specific issues.  Failure prompts us to think and intuit outside our usual patterns of cause and effect.  One of my favourite phrases when tapping on a particularly stubborn issue is “If I need to fail at understanding and resolving this challenge now, what are failure’s gifts?”  Seeing failure as a gift giver is a positive reframe that prompts us to look for the hidden benefits – what Gary Craig has called the Secondary Gains – in what appear to be negative situations.  We may be close to understanding something that requires special emotional support and the time provided by apparent failure allows for that support to materialize in our lives.  When our tapping failures are seen in this way, EFT becomes a process rather than a product, a journey rather than a destination; it takes the pressure off our problem solving efforts and brings into our awareness helpful forces beyond our control that support our intention to live authentically and with love.

In transforming my personal PTSD symptoms and in my work with clients, I consider our ability to reframe or shift our perspective on events to be our most valuable tool.  In every case, by learning to view our PTSD symptoms as messengers warning of potential danger we are able to create the necessary space to be with the evidence of our trauma, not as a threat, but as an ally that is looking out for us.  Once we understand and experience our explosive feelings as guides and teachers, we can then shift our relationship with them.

EFT and Perspective

In the midst of a personal or professional challenge, it is easy to lose perspective, especially when our emotions take us to a place of fear, worry, and anger.  In anticipation of life’s challenges, many of us who choose to create a culture of peace practice Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, or Meditation to reduce stress and support an optimistic and helpful outlook on life despite the strife that may be playing out all around us. Daily practices such as Meditation and EFT help to keep our energies balanced and our minds clear, thus promoting a calm view of life that contributes to positive outcomes despite inevitable challenges and conflicts.

New Year New Habits – Introduction: Sacred Communion with Self

The tradition of making New Year’s Resolutions is a long and often frustrating one.  This year, rather than depending on will power or the ‘no pain, no gain’ philosophy, it may be time to try something new.  Shifting habits by opening to their fullest stories offers a gentle way to begin the process of desired change.  Asking and listening to guidance regarding what positive contributions your habit is making to your life, no matter how technically destructive the habit may be, is one of the most effective ways to approach the possibility of positive change.   When we can view even the most negative habit as a faithful servant to our well being, we begin the magical process of transformation.
